Spotlight on Andrew Whittle

Andrew, what do you most enjoy about being a partner at Anderton Gables?

What I enjoy most is watching the business grow and seeing us continue to open doors in exciting areas of building surveying and project delivery. We have a fantastic team that continues to surprise me with their enthusiasm, dedication and determination every day.

You celebrate the company’s 10th birthday next year, what is the secret to your success?

Being great at what we do is obviously a must, but I believe the biggest driver to our success has been the company culture we’ve worked hard to create. We continually strive to recruit the best people technically, but we are keen to take on those who will work well with the team and also those who go the extra mile for our clients……that and a lot of good old hard work!

What are the major industry changes you have noticed in the last 10 years?

When Jonathan and I decided to set up the business it was September 2007 and pretty soon after the bottom dropped out of the surveying and construction market as the recession took hold. So from starting a business point of view, this was possibly the most difficult time to set-up. We thought that if we can make this work in a difficult market, then when the market improved, the business would hopefully fly and it has.

There have been so many changes over the last 10 years in the construction/surveying industry, but I would say that the most relevant changes to the industry and for our business have been with regards to the adoption of technology to improve processes and efficiency. Such as the development and integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) with the aim of collaborative working, more accepted use of electronic documentation, such as E-tendering / Electronic service of Party Wall Notices/ File sharing system such as drop box. These have enabled us to remain competitive whilst still ensuring good profit margins.

We are a firm that is keen to accept change and constantly strive to develop to keep ahead.

What do the next 10 years hold for Anderton Gables?

Within the next 10 years our aim is to be the North’s largest Building Consultancy practice with offices to support this objective. We will achieve this by continuing to recruit quality staff and further develop our Northern and National client base in a focussed and targeted manner.

You have built a strong brand based on local knowledge and expertise, can you expand on this?

We felt that an awful lot of local projects/surveying instructions were being serviced by predominantly southern based companies which have opened a ‘northern office’ as it was felt there just weren’t the local businesses able to work on similar scale projects and provide the same level of service. At Anderton Gables we aim to offer the range of services and expertise you would get from these companies but with local knowledge and a bit of Northern Soul!

Finally, what do you do in your spare time? Any interesting hobbies?

I don’t have much spare time so when I do get some I try to spend it with my much neglected family so I don’t have lots of time for hobbies, however, I’m really into snow-boarding and try to get away a couple of times a year when I really enjoy pushing myself on the slopes and enjoying a bit of après ski!
